Things have been a bit crazy and stressful around here lately, and I’ve been giving a lot of thought to Lorelle’s tips on Surviving the When Blogging Goes Bad in order to refocus my energies and get past the craziness and get back to writing.
Not only did I get sick with a horrific head cold and everything that goes with it, but my job is one that doesn’t allow me much opportunity to “call in sick”. If or when I’m not there, the entire office literally must shut down and all the patients rescheduled to another day which only adds to my stress.
It seems rather ridiculous to me that we haven’t got a system in play where, if I am unable to be at work for some reason, that business can continue as usual in my absence. Whatever (rolling my eyes).

Then there are the responsibilities that go with caring for my elderly father in-law, taking him to his weekly doctors appointments for an ongoing issue that nearly cost him a foot. Fortunately things have improved to the point where amputation is not under discussion anymore, but we’re still not out of the woods quite yet.
To Make Matters Worse-
While I’ve been anxiously awaiting the birth of my grandson in the next couple of weeks, I just recently learned that my son and his now ex-girlfriend have split up, and she has already moved back to Chicago where her parents live. I haven’t been able to get any explanation as to the cause of the breakup or any possibility of reconciliation, but it breaks my heart nonetheless to see this happening.
Continuing Education Overload-
While I would love nothing more than to be able to blog full-time and actually make a decent living at it and give up my “day job”, there are a variety of continuing ed courses that I’m required to take annually in order to keep my R.D.A. (Registered Dental Assistant/Office Manager) License that have kept me from completing the promised Assertiveness article.
Today I was able to finish up with my continuing ed course for CPR Certification, and passed the test with flying colors. It is reassuring for me to know that if something were to suddenly happen to a family member, friend or even a stranger, that I would be able to step up and offer assistance if needed.

Now I’m going to go grab a cup of hot tea to go along with my chicken soup, and hopefully in the next day or so I’ll have gotten well enough to finally complete the assertiveness article.

Feel better soon. I was just there a couple of weeks ago. Sometimes you just need to let the blog run on autopilot while you recover.

I’m glad that electrons don’t carry (human) viruses, because a whole bunch of bloggers that I read have been sick lately.
When I was teaching, I used to prepare my lectures when I was jogging, walking, kayaking, or riding my bike. Now I find myself preparing my blog posts the same way. It’s a good way of multi-tasking.

Get better quickly. With regards to the article on assertiveness - good things come to those who are prepared to wait.

Thanks everyone, fortunately this coming week is a “vacation” week, so I have plenty of time to rest and hopefully be 100% soon.

We are dealing with similar issues. I have been sick and bluesy. The parents are getting old. I worry about the kids. And blogging often seems unrewarding. But it keeps me away from the television which is a good thing. And it involves being creative on some level.
Good luck. Hope you feel better soon.

Thank you David. I know what you mean what about parents getting old, as my parents are both in their 70’s and my father in-law is 84 now and his health is declining. I know the day is coming when I’ll be posting about death and dealing with those struggles as well.
Blogging (for me personally) is many times therapeutic, which has it’s own rewards. Television has become monotonous and boring. I’m not into reality t.v. and it seems we’re overloaded on those type shows these days.
Being sick right now and getting lots of rest has actually been giving me more creative writing ideas, as opposed to numbing my creativity.
Worrying about the kids never seems to end does it? No matter how grown up they become, they still make decisions that disappoint and hurt us as parents. Argh! I only hope the problems my son and the mother of his child can come to some understanding, and focus on their child.

It never does stop. My father still worries about me and I worry about him. We are just a worrying family!

oh, the grandmother woes …
i remember last year when my daughter was pregnant; emotional enough even WITH her relationship intact! i wish you and your family all the best with this — and good health!

Thank you Isabella,
I’ve finally been able to reach both of the kids and they are talking again. They still don’t want to tell me what’s going on, and I respect their desire for privacy, so I’m just hoping for the best.

Kudos to you for taking care of your father in-law! I moved back to Missouri to help care for my father, and though it is tough I know I am doing the right thing. He is very happy I am taking care of him as opposed to some stranger.

tvb, thanks and good for you! It’s a tough job sometimes, but I wouldn’t want anyone else to do it either. We’re enjoying every moment possible with him, as we know his health is failing gradually, and he needs us just as much as we need him.

My wife is a RDA too (well, in Canada they are called CDAs) and know what you mean by the office literally shutting down when she can’t go to work.

Sapan, that is the biggest thing about my job that disturbs me the most.
While I enjoy helping patients, it seems ridiculous to me the sort of pressure put upon me to go to work even when I have the flu. That is not healthy for me, nor for patients and staff having me there in those circumstances.

That stinks about your workplace. On one hand it is probably nice to know that you are that important. Are the other people there just not competent??
BTW, thanks for mentioning the CPR cert. I need to get mine renewed.
