What Dad’s Really Want For Father’s Day: Creative and Unique Gift Ideas

What Dad’s Really Want For Father’s DayFather’s Day is on June 15th and it’s fast approaching, so it’s time to decide what gift you’ll get for the dad in your life. But first, forget the necktie. Forget the underwear and socks. Dad won’t be the least bit impressed to receive a silly necktie or undergarments that he’s never going to wear, and will only be added to the junk pile of other unwanted gifts received during previous holidays.

Ask any dad what he really wants for Father’s Day and you’ll surely hear something along the lines of, “Just give me some peace and quiet and later on, dinner out with the family”.

According to a recent poll of what dad’s really want for Father’s Day, 58% of dads said that the best part of Father’s Day is spending time with family, compared to 20% of dads who prefer relaxing, 17% who enjoy being the center of attention and 5% who look forward to receiving gifts. Of the 500 fathers included in the poll, tools (35%), electronics (34%) and gift certificates (26%) top dad’s list of favorite gifts this year.

Gift Certificates For Father's Day
Most dads aren’t too picky when it comes to what they want as a gift for Father’s Day, and it was interesting that the polled fathers said the worst gift was no gift at all/not being remembered (39%) or neckties (27%). It’s pretty obvious from the poll results that dad’s do enjoy receiving a thoughtful gift that shows how important he is to the family, how much he is loved and appreciated, and even a little bit pampered.

Choosing a great gift for Father’s Day really isn’t that hard. That includes dads who fall into the category of someone who “has everything” already. Put some serious thought into what the dad in your life likes and enjoys. Here are a few gift ideas to consider when deciding what to get dad for Father’s Day, even if he’s like my husband and supposedly has everything he could possibly want or need already.

Buy & Sell Tickets on StubHub!
Is he into sports? Get Great Tickets on StubHub.com! Tickets to a sporting event makes a superb gift for the sports enthusiast, and I’ve bought tickets through StubHub.com on many occasions and it’s a great service. Does dad enjoy cooking, perhaps he’s a lover of grilling outside? Consider buying him a nice new set of grilling tools and accessories, especially since they can get to looking rather shabby after awhile.

Is dad a music enthusiast, typically listening to music in his car or while fishing at the lake, or even while mowing the lawn? Does he have an iPod yet? If not, an iPod for dad would be an excellent choice as a gift. How about getting dad a very cool iPod Docking Station as an accessory item? He’ll love it!

Does he have an interest in tools to use around the house or while working on his car? My husband was thrilled and shocked at the same time when I surprised him with a brand new extension ladder that I overheard him talking about to his sister. I won some serious brownie points with that gift. Consider getting dad a gift certificate if you aren’t sure what he would like or want, but don’t let Father’s Day pass without getting dad a gift.

What are his Hobbies? Does dad enjoy fishing, hunting, golf or other outdoor sports? Consider fly fishing gifts for the fishing enthusiast. Fishing dads would love being taken on a fly fishing trip to the smoky mountains! Does he enjoy gardening or working in the yard? Is dad more of an indoor type guy, preferring to enjoy his leisure time watching t.v., movies or playing video games? Have you considered Beer Gift Baskets? Does he love electronic gadgets? What about a GPS Navigation System for dad? GPS units have been a real favorite with the fellas, so you can’t go wrong getting dad one of those.

$5 off $100 Electronics!
The Garmin Nuvi 350 navigation system I bought for my husband is by far his favorite gift to date, but he’s about to be surprised once again this year with an iPod Docking Station that I know he will enjoy since he’s a big music enthusiast, as well as a new Camcorder to replace the one I recently dropped and broke. Oops.

There are many creative and unique Father’s Day gift ideas that the dad in your life will be pleased to receive and they don’t have to cost a fortune, so with a little imagination and planning, Father‘s Day can be relaxing and enjoyable all at the same time for dear ol’ dad.

Hi Matt, so you’re a food kind of guy eh? A very special menu food item sort of guy. I now realize that I left out food gift ideas for Father’s Day in my article, and lots of guys really love to eat good food. Of course, there’s always gift certificates to restaurants and gift baskets for men if the ladies are still wondering what to do.

Funny, first men say that the best gift would be just “to be left alone” or to have “some time spent with family”, and then that “the worst gift was no gift at all”. A bit controversial answers:)

The best gift is something he’d love to buy himself but is too frugal for it:)

Yeah it did seem to be a bit skewed, but obviously dads do want to be given a thoughtful gift for Father’s Day.

I can still remember an old saying about buying gifts for women that basically said that even if the woman/wife says she doesn’t want any gifts, she really means she does want a gift but doesn’t want to tell you what to get her.

Both men and women want their significant other to put some thought into what to give them for a gift, and not have to be told specifically what to get.

I’ve surprised that someone that I love very much (beloved wife) gave me a good gadget from latest release of one of big camcorder brands last year. For this year, I will be waiting for her surprise and do big hope. She knew me quite well as we lived together for longtime. I appreciate the gift that she’ll give and promise to strengthen our love to become unity.
On father’s day, I am planning to relax on beach with rent a cottage, and having fun together.

great post. There are rumors the iphone 2 is coming out next week and that itll be available on the same day its announced. That would really make his day as a gift.

  6. Well, since we are kind of on the subject of gadgets and such, I’d recommend Mario Kart for the Wii. Mine is on the way. I sort of ordered it as an early Father’s Day gift for myself. ๐Ÿ™‚

hahaha, Jeff you are sooo bad. ๐Ÿ™‚

  8. Hi Lin, What I want for Father’s Day is just to not have to work and be able to spend time with my family. It they need to give me something, a handmade card from my two (young) kids is the best. Going out to a kid-friendly family restaurant for a good dinner is just fine too.
To me Father’s Day is a chance for dads to be thankful they’re a dad. It’s the best decision I ever made in my life. And its a chance for kids to tell their dads’ two things – Thanks, and I love you. Being a dad ain’t easy, but it’s one of the most rewarding things a man can ever do.
Hmmm, I don’t usually get so sentimental. ~ Steve

  9. Lin says:

Untwisting (oops I mean Steve) being sentimental about your kiddos is a wonderful part of being a dad. Showing appreciation and saying Thank You for all you do for the family is a huge gift for Father’s Day. And it’s oh so cheap too. ๐Ÿ™‚
