Christmas stocking is not something that my family have ever adopted. I’m sort of wondering whether or not it’s more of an American custom.

That’s not to say that we don’t buy small gifts to add to the main one, we just don’t hang stockings full of gifts up.

I’m an Aussie and I’m not saying that all Aussies don’t use Christmas stockings. Heck it could be that my family is just weird. If you have any other Aussies commenting on your blog, I’ll be really interested on what they have to say.

      Hi Sire,

Just for you…, I did a quick search for “Do Aussies use Christmas Stockings” and the results were that “yes, some Australians put them up”. So there you have it. 🙂

Christmas stockings is a tradition in America for sure, but I’ve read numerous articles lately where lots of people in the U.S. have decided not to use stockings at all this year to keep costs down. Others are saying that they will stick to very cheap stocking stuffers and may even use very small stockings instead of the larger ones.

      • Sire says:

Thanks for that Lin. I reckon you must have heard around the traps what a lazy blogger I am 😀

I wonder how many of those stocking stuffing Aussies actually Americans who have migrated over? 😉

My family always used stockings for truly little things: chapstick, stick on earrings, packs of gum, etc. But they were ALWAYS individually wrapped, since that’s more fun than the actual gifts anyway. 😀 Hubs’ family always had stockings, but they never wrapped those gifts, and my mother said her stockings always had fruit and some candy (she’s 64 and grew up on a cotton farm in Oklahoma- oranges were considered a real treat).

BTW, I just came over from Griz’s most recent post, and I have a few (2 on subdomains, 1 main but work-in-progress) costume sites. 1 of the subdomains is Christmas themed, though it’s extremely underdeveloped. Let me know if you’re interested. 😉

    • Lin says:

The really cheap Christmas stocking stuffers are often the best, especially when they’re individually wrapped, as you say. Being able to open each new item that’s been wrapped makes opening stockings that much more fun, especially for children.

Thanks for the heads up about the costume domains, but I’ve got my hands full at the moment with three current sites. Perhaps in a couple/few months I’ll be ready for another site. We’ll see. I keep you mind when the time comes. 🙂

      • WordVixen says:

Not a problem! I’m addicted to starting sites, so I’m sure I’ll have something appropriate when you’re ready.

By the way, I’ve heard of another interesting tradition regarding small Christmas presents- some people actually hang them on the tree like ornaments, or even hang the Christmas stockings on their trees. Just thought I’d mention it. 🙂

        • Lin says:

haha, just thinking about the tradition of hanging Christmas stockings on the tree makes me laugh. With the size stocking we’ve normally used and the amount of stuff put into them, the Christmas tree would fall over! Ha!
