10 Reasons Why People Don’t Go to Church Anymore

Churches around the US have changed over the years, where multi-site churches mean pastors are able to reach thousands of would-be church attendees on the web, says USA Today. In an interview with pastors Tim Keller, Mark Driscoll and Ed Stetzer, the “old fashioned”, traditional churches from grandma and grandpa’s time are going by the wayside and are being replaced by what is often referred to as the “mega church” with thousands upon thousands of church members.

Having visited a few “mega churches” over the years, such as the Potter’s House and a few others, witnessing the burgeoning growth of large churches and the increased numbers of online internet churches has been interesting to say the least. To say this ain’t your grandma’s church anymore is an understatement.

Going to Christian church services and meetings is a tradition for many families, but the traditional way of attending church can now be accomplished by watching church services on television, online and by watching church service podcasts like the Holy Trinity church offers interested ones. Enjoying a sense of fellowship, shaking hands with the pastor or minister and developing a one-on-one personal relationship with the preacher and family appear to be disappearing and creating culture shock for some.

“It’s not the traditional American mom-and-pop church, where the same pastor counsels parishioners, visits when they’re ill or marries or buries them. . .

This form of high-efficiency evangelism allows thousands of worshipers to hear the same message from a lead pastor or a member of his team, in person or by video at three, five, even a dozen or more locations. Meanwhile, others take over the one-to-one side of ministry — counseling, ceremonies and small-group guidance. . .

“I do miss having a pastor at the door shaking hands in the ‘check-out line,’ ” says Lauren Green, drawn to join Redeemer by Keller’s preaching. “But I realize that model of a personal relationship with a particular pastor is probably gone.”

Having witnessed firsthand various kinds of abuses within churches over the years, and the increased evidence of pure greed shown at some large churches we’ve attended, it really comes as no surprise that many previous mega church members have become church dropouts and no longer regularly attend church anymore. Why? Why don’t people go to church anymore? Here are some of the reasons based on a survey poll:

LifeWay Research, the research arm of the Southern Baptist Convention, based in Nashville, conducted a survey of 1,402 “unchurched” adults to determine why respondents had not attended a religious service in a church, synagogue or mosque for several months.

“More than one in five (22%) of Americans say they never go to church, the highest ever recorded by the General Social Survey, conducted every two years by the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago. In 2004, the percentage was 17%.

Just 52% agree on the essential Christian belief that “Jesus died and came back to life”.

61% say the God of the Bible is “no different from the gods or spiritual beings depicted by world religions such as Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, etc.,” although Buddhist philosophy has no god and Hindus worship many.

Most of the unchurched (86%) say they believe they can have a “good relationship with God without belonging to a church.” And 79% say “Christianity today is more about organized religion than loving God and loving people.”

The importance of faith and prayer in our lives goes without saying, or at least it should. Keeping true to Christian beliefs and understanding the power of prayer can be accomplished whether believers physically attend a local church, watch church services on television or pod casts on the internet.

Listening to almost nothing but “fire and brimstone” Bible sermons from childhood, or Hell and Damnation types of sermons from the pulpit leave much to be desired. Seeing and hearing ministers running around the Church stage screaming and hollering and pounding their fists about whatever Bible topic they chose to speak about, is a complete turnoff to me.

I don’t go to church to listen to a pastor scream and yell about something or another, and if that is the only way for a pastor or minister to preach and get their message across, I’ll just find a church to attend elsewhere without all the dancing and prancing around. I much prefer ministers who preach and teach practical things about life, with scripture readings that drive the point home, and that’s just one reason why I like Joyce Meyer Ministries.

Reading Joyce Meyer books and watching her show on television every chance I get is always enjoyable. It would be great to be able to attend a Joyce Meyer’s “Convention Tour” if it comes to our local area, but for now I just have to be content with listening to her television program as she talks about serving God, reading and re-reading her book “The Love Revolution”, and enjoying everyday life.

The Easter Story – Jesus Resurrection – Resurrection Eggs and Easter Stories for Children

Easter story books for kids, toddlers, preschoolers and babies can help teach young children the true and real meaning of Easter celebrations in a fun, interactive and educational way. Easter Sunday, known amongst many Christians as Resurrection Day or Resurrection Sunday, is a religious celebration of Jesus’ resurrection from the dead and ascent into heaven to sit at the Father’s right hand.

Ask a child or young person what Easter is and what Easter is really about and you will likely receive a variety of answers that may or may not be true, at least not an explanation or definition of the real origin and meaning of Easter as a Holy Christian holiday. Kids of all ages can tell you about many of the secular customs and traditions, such as the Easter Bunny and Easter baskets, egg hunts, candy and treats etc.

Teaching the Easter Story to Children

Some kids might be able to explain how every year on Easter Sunday their whole family attends church services together of one religious denomination or another in observance of Easter. For some children, in varying age groups, Easter means nothing but dressing up and fun and games and planned activities with families.

Some kids today are completely oblivious to what Easter really means, including older children of Christian parents who regularly attend church services, or at least consider themselves to be devout Christian believers even if they are not associated with a specific religion or church organization.

As a parent, I find this very sad. There are many ways to teach children the story of Easter and the resurrection of Jesus Christ in an interactive, engaging, fun manner kids will enjoy. If you do an online search for “interactive Easter story”, you will find a plethora of websites offering free downloadable/printable Easter stories, coloring pages, games and various holiday-related activities for kids.

As much I might like to recommend, suggest or link directly to some of them for my reader’s benefit, I am not inclined to put my faith in or trust websites I’m not personally familiar with and that might put my readers at risk of possible computer viruses. Which, by the way, is the exact reason why I do not provide printable downloads or PDF files from my own site.

Visitors arriving on this site searching Easter-related topics or other subjects have no way of knowing with 100% certainty that it is safe to download and print such things, so it doesn’t make much sense to bother setting that up.

Resurrection Eggs

I’m quite familiar with a very popular way of teaching kids about Easter called Resurrection Eggs, which are plastic Easter eggs with various religious symbols inside each egg to help kids learn the story of Easter and are used by parents, Sunday School teachers and others. The idea originated with a children’s book called Benjamin’s Box: The Story of the Resurrection Eggs by Melody Carlson.

There are tons of articles online with directions on how to make your own Resurrection Eggs set for kids that are easy to follow and require no downloading at all. If you are inclined to make yourself a do-it-yourself set of these Easter eggs as a way of helping children learn the story about Easter, Jesus, the Resurrection etc, just do a search for “how to make resurrection eggs” or check out the how-to demonstration videos on YouTube. If making or buying a set of resurrection eggs helps in the teaching process with little kids, then by all means try it out and see what you think.

Easter Stories For Children

There are many picture books, “board books” and Easter story books for babies to preschool age kids, as well as books about Easter for 4-8 year old children and up. There is certainly nothing wrong with these children’s books at all, don’t get me wrong. Many of them are telling great Easter-type stories just for the fun of reading, versus Religious/Christian Easter stories that actually explain the Christian, spiritual and religious aspects about Easter and Jesus Christ and His resurrection from the dead (regardless of a person’s religious affiliation or membership).

Being a Christian believer, a non-church attending Christian, it makes no difference to me whatsoever what methods are used to teach kids about Jesus, Easter, God, or any other religious or spiritual subject matter. But I do believe children need to be taught these things somehow. I am spiritual but not religious, in the strict sense of the word “religious”.

I rarely ever share my personal beliefs of a “religious” or spiritual nature on this blog, other than to say that I am amongst many people who do not attend church services and for very good reasons, and to answer reader email questions about Christian parenting of adult children on some occasions. I’ve received occasional emails from subscribed readers and visitors asking me to write more articles of a Christian nature, but I’m very hesitant to do so.

To me, teaching kids about God and his son Jesus is a very personal thing for parents, and it has nothing to do with being a member of a church or religion. Nor am I interested in debating the subject of religion and spirituality and the differences between the two. I believe in the Bible as the inspired word of God, but I also understand there are many ways to teach kids the Bible, including the use of a variety of books as helpful aids and being a good role model.

Parents are responsible in the eyes of the Almighty God to teach their children all about Him, and if reading a variety of children’s Easter books helps in that effort, than I see that as a very good thing.

Shopping for cute Easter dresses for little girls, infant babies, toddlers and older girls to wear a pretty dress on Easter Sunday has been fun. Having a soon-to-be born infant baby girl in the family makes shopping that much more exciting, plus finding some great deals on Easter dresses for toddler girls that are simply adorable dresses.

Little girls and babies look beautiful in their “Sunday best” dresses, fancy shoes and hat accessories that make little girls look like a princess at Easter parties, egg hunts, church services or while attending special Easter brunch or dinner with family and friends.

What’s great about finding little girls dresses for special occasions or holidays like Easter is that these dresses can be worn as inexpensive flower girl dresses for weddings, first communion, formal parties or any other kind of special occasion where nice fancy dresses are desired.

Easter, spring and summer dresses are among my favorite type dresses for little girls to shop for, especially those that come as two or three-piece sets with coat/jacket and matching hat. I love finding Easter dresses that come with a matching purse for little girls to carry, or at least summer-type dresses for Easter with a nice light coat when weather gets cool in the evening.

One little girl in the family fits into typical toddler sizes, size 4T last time I checked, but kids grow so fast that buying the next size up would be best for Easter this year. That way the little princess can wear her dress for more than one special occasion, and can enjoy wearing her new dress throughout the summer and maybe for her coming birthday party. After checking out the dresses at local Kid to Kid stores and finding no girls Easter dresses of any kind, I knew where to find dresses that are not only inexpensive but pretty too.

Nothing but the best for these little girls. Since I know the favorite colors of each of the girls and the parent’s colors, style and length preferences, I was able to finally make a decision of what Easter dresses to buy for these sweet little girls. I can hardly wait to see the pictures taken of the girls with the Easter Bunny and while running around trying to find hidden Easter eggs at the egg hunts near them.

These little girls don’t know it yet, nor do their parents, but when they receive their brand new Easter dress, the package will include an Easter basket and stuffed toy bunny, as well as some delicious Easter candy from CandyDirect.com (minus a couple pieces of candy for tasting purposes), and a personalized Easter card with their name on it. Prices for Easter dresses for little girls or baby girls vary from downright expensive to dirt cheap Easter dresses for under $20.00, based on all the places online I’ve looked.

Overall cost is of course one factor in choosing an Easter dress, spring/summer dresses or just holiday outfits since kids grow out of their clothes almost before you can say “Easter Bunny”. But, speaking personally, spending a little extra money on what I feel is a perfect Easter dress for these special little girls in our lives is well worth it. The Easter dresses I purchased are under $50.00 each, not including the Easter basket, candy, stuffed toy, card, etc.

Ivory Black Girls Easter Dress 7-16

I much prefer giving personalized Easter gifts and baskets, where the gift recipient sees the extra effort and time put in to choose the perfect gift for her (or him), regardless of who the gift is for. The little girls in the family will love their new Easter dresses and the extra goodies found in the package, and that is all that matters to me.

Since these kids already have a collection of children’s Easter books, including some Little Golden Books that are Easter related, I chose not to include any holiday books this year. Besides, their Birthdays are coming up soon enough that I’ll have plenty of opportunity to spoil them silly, within reason. All in all, these special little girls in our lives will definitely have a very happy Easter this year, and we are thrilled to do our very small part in helping to make that happen.

As much as we enjoy listening to music and want to stay on top of the best prices and special deals, we of course have our Amazon wish lists set up, but we’ve also bookmarked to our favorites Amazon’s main music department to keep us informed on any and all new releases and upcoming releases. That way we can order newly released music or pre-order cd’s with soon-to-be-released music before the actual release date by our favorite groups and singers early on and not find the music we want is sold out already and has to be back-ordered.

One of my favorite places to hang out on Amazon and have bookmarked is their hot new music releases page, where we’re able to keep tabs on all the newly released music. More often than not, as busy as we are in our lives and not real interested in watching much television at all these days, it’s easy for us to miss announcements on TV or radio of a new album coming out by singers/groups on our “must have” list.

2011 Hot New Music Releases

There are 27 different music categories or genres on Amazon’s new music page, and within each category/genre is a list of the top 100 or best selling music and their current ranking on the popularity list which is updated hourly. Twenty seven categories of music, multiplied by 100 newly released albums per genre, equals out to 2700 new releases in music available on Amazon. That’s a lot of music to choose from!

I don’t know who or how the so-called 100 best songs of 2010 is chosen by Amazon, but I’m not impressed with their list of songs that include extremely explicit album titles and songs with explicit lyrics. If I wouldn’t want even my grown children to listen to such “music”, than I don’t want or like the cd for myself and I certainly would not buy or download (even for free) such music for anyone else.

The Little Golden Books collection of children’s books, originally published by Simon & Schuster in cooperation with the Artist and Writers Guild, will celebrate its 70th anniversary on October 1, 2012. Little Golden Books is a very popular collection of hardbound books for reading to infant babies, toddlers and older children, with the very first 12 titles of Little Golden Books published on October 1, 1942.

Starting a collection of Little Golden Books can be daunting, since some of the older Golden books are rare and very hard to find unless you’re able to find vintage Golden Books at garage sales, antique shops, flea markets, thrift book stores, online auction sites like eBay, Etsy shops or on Amazon. No collection of Little Golden Books would be complete without the endearing book called Tootle, written by author Gertrude Crampton, a children’s story about a little train that could do just about anything.

Many years ago, when my first child was a baby, I began making a list of new Golden Books for collecting over the years, with the hope to buy every Golden Book published to read to my children before and after they were born. Even though my kids are all grown up and on their own, the Disney Golden Books that were made into classic movies are still their favorites, and they still enjoy watching these adorable Disney movies as adults:

My Golden Books collection is not complete because new Golden Book titled stories are published regularly and new stories are being released this year too, but I have managed to find quite a few rare and numbered Little Golden Books on Etsy, Amazon and eBay lot auctions or buy-it-now sales at deeply discounted prices from my continuously growing Golden Books list that I try to keep updated as much as possible.

The very first Little Golden Books titles published in 1942 included these 12 classic story books that parents and children of all ages love to read:

Over two billion copies of Little Golden Books have been sold since the first set were published, and are available in different languages. Little Golden Books used to cost just 25 cents back in the day, but the average price for each Little Golden book nowadays is usually in the range of two or three dollars per book. Some of the most popular and notable authors of Little Golden Books include writers like Patricia and Richard Scarry, Garth Williams, Mary Blair, Margaret Wise Brown, Jim McDermott, Bob Staake, Eloise Wilkin and many others.

On Amazon, Golden Books boxed sets offering a variety of titles can also be found at pretty inexpensive prices. Serious collectors of Little Golden Books should definitely add to their collection Steve Santi’s Warman’s Little Golden Books Identification and Price Guide to understand how to determine the value and condition of your prized Golden Books collection. If you search on Etsy for Little Golden Books, or on eBay for Little Golden Books Lot sales, you will find sets of new and old Golden book titles for sale at a much cheaper price than buying the books individually.
