Spray On CondomEver since the spray-on condom was featured on the popular forensics television show CSI, spray-on condoms have become the subject of a lot of interest online. But, Jan Vinzenz Krause’ one-size-fits-all contraceptives may never hit the store shelves after the German inventor behind them admitted his team had been unable to overcome technical problems.

The spray-on-condom, which was introduced around 2006 by Krause will not be produced (unless “technical issues” are solved). Krause invented the spray-on-condom to have “a neat fit, sits comfortably, can barely be felt and still is very safe”.

“We thought why not come up with a condom that fits the man rather than vice versa? This would represent a revolution in the condom market,” said Krause, whose institute gives sex education as well as providing advice on AIDS prevention and contraception.

The condom is described as “German engineering at its finest”. Demonstrating it on a model, the character Lindsay Monroe says: “Simply apply like so. Allow a few moments for maximum drying time and, boom. Instant condom”. The spray-on condom will be more expensive than conventional ones.

Krause appealed for testers to come forward, promising the spray-on condom would offer a better, safer fit for men of all sizes, and said he hoped to have it on sale by 2008. But the project has since hit problems and may never reach the market, according a statement posted on his website.

“Whether we can solve the technical problems, and whether the advancement of the idea is financially viable, remains uncertain,” Krause wrote.

A “spray-on-condom”? Hmm, it will be interesting to see if Krause and his team can overcome the “technical problems” any time soon. But for now, it falls into the category of goodbye my almost lover.
